Bedbugs

Bed bugs are quite definitely back – and with a vengeance. No-one quite knows why but there has been a recent dramatic increase in the number of reported cases of bed bug bites and infestationsin Toronto, Scarborough, Mississauga, York, Markham, Brampton, Oakville, other locations in the Durham region of Ontarioand in fact throughout the entire developed world, so it looks as if the problem is here to stay. Some experts think that widespread international travel may be one cause of the resurgence.

Bed bugs undoubtedly like to travel. They can hitch rides pretty much anywhere – in your clothes, suitcases, on buses, cars, planes and cruise ships, in your child's school bag, on good as new furniture and bedding – there really is no limit to where they can get.

Bed bugs are not known to carry disease but their bites are extremely irritating and can easily get become infected if they are scratched too often. Bed bugs can also cause mental anguish for the simple fact that no-one likes to think that they are sharing their bed with these animals. If you're not kept awake by the itching itself, then just the idea of them may cause you stress, anxiety and even insomnia.

The problem with bed bugs is that they are one of the most difficult of pest infestations to deal with alone. This is partly because bed bugs are barely visible and so can hide easily in the smallest of cracks and crevices, but they are also extremely resistant and can survive for up to one year without feeding. Bed bugs are also prolific breeders – a single female can lay up to 500 eggs in her life time, eggs hatch after approximately 10 days and within one month the new born nymph has transformed into a fully-fledged adult and is ready to suck its first blood meal and start reproducing.

The actual bed bug itself is usually active only at night when the warmth of your body tempts it out of its hidey hole in the hours just before dawn to feast on your blood until it is engorged. You probably won't feel much while your blood is being sucked because the bed bug injects saliva which contains anaesthetic and anticoagulants. But once the anaesthetic wears off you will be left with a series of raised, red welts often three in a row, which can itch infuriatingly for up to two weeks.

Bedbugs Life Cycle - Cimex Lectularius

The first step and the hardest part of exterminating bed bugs is to find them – every single one of them. You may often see tell tale reddish brown spots on mattresses, bedding or staining wooden furniture near to cracks or grooves or where joints have not been sealed properly.

They like to hide in other nooks and crannies, usually close to their blood source, so you need to thoroughly inspect all around the bed, including behind the headboard, at the joint of carpets with walls, under the bed, in closets nearby as well as in clothing, bags and other fabric items that have contact with the floor.

Hunting out bed bugs and eliminating them for good can take hours of work vacuuming, washing, cleaning, sealing grooves, loose wallpaper, shaking out books, clocks, nightstands, anywhere made of wood or fabric where they may be hiding and then examining all possible locations where they may have laid their eggs. And you have to repeat this cycle every two weeks for several months to be sure of removing newly hatched nymphs that will quickly start the reproductive cycle over again if given half the chance.
